He elevated detective fiction into literature: with his sharp style, ironic language, and cynical humor, he gave it new depth. His uncompromising private detective Philip Marlowe rewrote the rules of noir. He infused his dark, pulsating stories of Los Angeles with experiences from the wars and his own struggle with alcohol. Thanks to him, the detective novel gained literary respect, and he strongly influenced film and later authors.
