Milan Rastislav Štefánik

He combined science, diplomacy, and military courage in an extraordinary life story. In France, he earned respect as an astronomer and officer, and during the First World War he made a significant contribution to building the Czechoslovak Legions. Alongside Masaryk and Beneš, he was one of the principal founders of Czechoslovakia. His remarkable career was tragically cut short by a plane crash near Bratislava in 1919.
