Louis XIV

5. 9. 1638 – 1. 9. 1715

Nicknamed the Sun King, he ruled France for more than seven decades and transformed it into a European power. He moved the court to the opulent Versailles, where he concentrated power in his own hands through strict protocol. He loved the arts and generously supported music and theater. His era became a symbol of absolutism and a model for rulers throughout Europe, but the country was also exhausted by protracted wars and mounting debts.
