Jonathan Swift
30. 11. 1667 –
19. 10. 1745
The satirist, essayist, and Anglican clergyman Jonathan Swift became renowned for his ruthlessly sharp humor and criticism of politics and social conditions. His most famous work, Gulliver’s Travels, appears to be an adventure story, but in reality it exposes human pride and the absurdity of power. He also caused outrage with his ironic pamphlet A Modest Proposal. He served as the dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin.
