John Locke

29. 8. 1632 – 28. 10. 1704

He was among the thinkers who fundamentally shaped the Enlightenment and the foundations of modern democracy. As an English philosopher, he developed the theory of the social contract and defended the natural rights of human beings—life, liberty, and property—as the standard of legitimate government. His writings strongly influenced the framers of the American Constitution and also inspired the ideas of the French Revolution.
