Jan Masaryk

The son of the first Czechoslovak president, a charismatic diplomat and exceptionally popular foreign minister, he won people over with his humor, humanity, and informality. He believed that Czechoslovak democracy firmly belonged to the West, yet he remained in the government after February 1948. His tragic and still unexplained death became one of the symbols of the dark postwar years.
