James Buchanan

As the only unmarried U.S. president, he combined legal training with diplomatic talent, serving as secretary of state and ambassador to Britain. He entered the White House at a time when slavery was dividing the country. Rather than bringing calm, however, he contributed to hesitation and disputes over Kansas, and to this day is therefore considered one of the lowest-rated presidents on the eve of the Civil War.
