Hans Christian Ørsted

In a famous experiment, he brought a wire carrying an electric current close to a compass and observed the needle deflect. In 1820, the Danish physicist and chemist Hans Christian Ørsted thereby demonstrated that an electric current creates a magnetic field and laid the foundations of electromagnetism. His discovery influenced generations of researchers; the unit of magnetic field strength, the oersted, still bears his name.
