Charles Glover Barkla

A pioneer of X-ray physics, he fundamentally transformed the understanding of the atom by showing that each chemical element emits its own characteristic X-rays. He was awarded the 1917 Nobel Prize in Physics for this discovery. His research laid the foundations of X-ray spectral analysis and significantly influenced modern physics and chemistry. He was one of the leading figures in the field at the universities of Liverpool and Edinburgh.
