He was able to draw poetry from ordinary speech, pub anecdotes, and seemingly insignificant episodes, bringing Czech prose fame far beyond the country's borders. He wrote with distinctive humor, melancholy, and tenderness toward people on the margins. He became famous for the books **Closely Watched Trains** and **I Served the King of England**. He also gathered stories of human lives with extraordinary sensitivity in Prague pubs.
