Abraham Lincoln

He rose from humble beginnings as a self-taught man and lawyer to become President of the United States. As the 16th president, he distinguished himself through eloquence and courage and led the country through the Civil War. He made a decisive contribution to the abolition of slavery and left an indelible mark through his speeches, especially the Gettysburg Address. His life was ended by an assassination, but his legacy of freedom, unity, and justice has endured.
